Advice :: Sex/Libido Stimulants
This section lists the most common products on the market that are used to increase sexual performance, boost natural testosterone levels and increase libido. There are a vast range of new prescription drugs used to improve sexual performance, but we haven't listed them here. For the ones we have listed, we hope to have answered the common question that is usually associated with these products; that being “How does it work?”. If anything, its an informative read!
Horny Goat Weed
Horny Goat Weed (Epimedium extract) has
been used as an aphrodisiac (sex stimulant) for hundreds of years. So how
does Horny Goat Weed work? Research has shown that Horny Goat Weed can inhibit
an enzyme called acetylcholinesterase (AChE); the active ingredient is Icariin.
AChE rapidly stops neurotransmission at cholinergic synapses like those found
in the brain and at neuromuscular junctions, which are needed for speedy
responses in the neuromuscular system. By inhibiting AChE, Horny Goat Weed
supports higher levels of the key cholinergic neurotransmitters associated
with sexual arousal.
Yohimbe & Tongkat Ali
Simply put use you would use
Yohimbe for erections and Tongkat Ali for libido (it is claimed to boost
testosterone levels to). Both will work for the specified purpose, but only
if you are knowledgeable about what you buy, and at what dosage to use it.
For both products, what you find on the market is mostly useless because
most of the yohimbe and tongkat ali that you can buy contains almost no active
ingredients or is grossly under-dosed.
Tribulus Terrestris
This is an age old supplement which
has been used to try increase sex drive, increase libido and strengthen erections.
There have been mixed opinions as to its effectiveness, more positive than
negative. Protodioscin is the active ingredient in tribulus terrestris, which
may increase the secretion of Luteinizing hormone. In turn, Luteinizing hormone
stimulates the release of testosterone. The concentration of active protodioscin
varies greatly depending on which brand you use. Typical standardised concentrations
include 250mg up to 750mg.
Viagra
Viagra (Sildenafil citrate) is an oral drug with
an effective dose of 50mg. The man must be stimulated or excited first, so
don't expect viagra to magically give him an erection, it will just sustain
it after he's aroused.
When a man is sexually stimulated, nitric oxide (as well as other hormones) is released into the tissues of the penis (corpora cavernosa and corpus spongisum) and prompts an increased production of a chemical component called cGMP ( cyclic guanosine monophosphate ) that dilates the blood meshwork of the penis. This results in an increased inflow of blood and creates an erection. On the other hand, another tissue chemical called PDE-5 (phosphodiesterase type-5) breaks down cGMP in the penile tissue and therefore interferes with adequate erection. Viagra blocks PDE-5 and therefore promotes the vascular dilatation, increasing the flow of blood into the penile tissue and causing the hard erection. Basically, viagra blocks the blocker of the erection stimulant chemical.
